Hello all! I new to bamboo and I'm am wanting to plant a bamboo privacy screen around my backyard fence (total length = 170ft). I'd like to keep my costs down. How far apart do I need to place the pots? Also can anyone recommend an effective & economical rhizome barrier? Thanks.

Hi, economics (unless you know of a free dig-your-own bamboo source) definitely will affect the size of your starter plants and their initial spacing.
Years ago we used to provide inexpensive field dug 6 -12 ft tall Phyllostachys species from our grove for customers who wanted to create instant screens, and planted at 5' centers they had a dense hedgerow within a year.
Again, it was relative to the size and bushyness (number of culms) of the starter plant.
For those wanting to develop a grove with a lower budget, 12 ft (3M) centers would suffice, with the spaces filling in within about 3 or 4 years, depending on size of plant and growing conditions

Using bamboo clumpers as a hedgerow, starting with plants spaced further apart, a result can be larger gaps between the clumper such as..
{}/\{}/\{}/\
By starting of with clumpers grouped closer together, it becomes a more solid hedgerow over time.
This isn't a problem with runners because they will quickly fill in the spaces in between.
