I received this enquiry today:

"Hi Mark,
I have a company in Poland. Rather far is not it ?
We are carrying the project referring to cable system attachable to the house walls as a support for climbing plants. As a horizontal beams we consider bamboo cane but we afraid freeze (up to -25C), hot (up to 35C) moisture and pests. Please advise us if bamboo is applicable. We need about 40 mm diameter members 1m length and 8 mm members 1 m length. A durability of bamboo is crucial. How many years bamboo can survive in our climate cover by plants, exposed at the weather factors ? What to do with the ends, should be closed ? How, which material should be used ? Should be bamboo treat somehow (conservation process) ?
I will appreciate very much your answer.
Best regards,
Wlodzimierz

I am of the opinion that in such a situation, where the object is to be sold as a product, with high expectations of longevity, bamboo is perhaps not the answer. Bamboo is not always the answer in any given situation.
Wlodzimierz, the durablility of bamboo varies a lot, depending of exposure and species used, but against a house wall, outside and covered in plants, I wouldn't give it more than two years before is starts to look very aged. I make fences from bamboo, and my clients WANT the aged look, and like the way it changes down the years. But I have designed them to still be structurally sound for many years.

Anyone else got any thoughts on the matter?

Replacement parts.
I had a (non-treated) bamboo trellis structure function in open extreme elements for 10 years before replacing it, though I do replace or add extra pieces to other rustic garden trelisses etc more often (3-5 yrs).

Longevity...
Constantly high rainfall humidity will degrade bamboo faster - just like wood.
Hot/dry temps will cause cracks and splits. They are acceptable providing the design ensures that structural integrity is not affected.

Structural integrity...
The materials - species selection, quality and grade, and availability.
There is bamboo, better bamboo and best bamboo.

The joinery - the bindings and connection methods used for attaching and securing multiple pieces of bamboo will determine the longevity and functional integrity of the structure.

When bamboo is joined together it actually increases in strength...
- the sum of the parts has a greater value as a whole.

Therefore, for any long-lasting outdoor bamboo structures it is a good idea to use bindings and joinery connections that will outlast the bamboo.

-----------
This year I need to make a number of complete garden structural replacements.
I've been looking forward to starting all over again and trying something new!
All I need to find is the time to do it!
