Close up of a culm sheath and auricles (http://www.bamboocraft.net/bamboo/showphoto.php?photo=136) of Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' - Central Texas

Showing the `fringed' auricle of a culm sheath.
Note the band of fuzzy hairs around the base of the sheath, where the sheath attaches to the culm node.
...also the colour of the sheath, typical for this species, in it's fresh, young stage.

Photo#1 (http://www.bamboocraft.net/bamboo/showphoto.php?photo=901)
Several hurricanes have passed through Avery Island, Louisiana USA during the decades that this portion of the Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' grove in `Bird City', Jungle Gardens has been permitted to roam wild, under natures conditions.

Photo#2 (http://www.bamboocraft.net/bamboo/showphoto.php?photo=902)
The hurricanes have aided in the felling of older culms, returning the culms to the earth, to become food for future generations of bamboo.
Bamboo, by natures way, recycles bamboo in mid-air. Decomposition takes place all around newly emerging culms.

They grow largest where the greatest amount of decomposition has occured....
