"Hi there.
I thought I'd share this with you. My first piece of bamboo jewellery. I made it for my wife as a birthday present. Pretty simple really, but tricky to make the slices thin and still drill a tiny hole for the wire. In this case it's gold, I went a bit over the top. Sarah has reactions to base metals. A neck with expensive tastes!"

Hi Mark,
Wonderful, original and re-bambú design!
I can imagine the difficult to make such a holes. Let me guess that You first finish one side of the slice with the whole culm, then made the holes and then cut, sand and finish the pieces at both sides...
Mariana also likes the piece.
What specie?

Hi Angel and Mark,
I wish I had thought of drilling the hole first. But I didn't. Actually it is probably easier to drill the hole after in the middle of the slice, rather than cutting and sanding the slice till the hole is in the middle.
Anyway, it wasn't too bad.
Mark, I thought you'd relish the thought of another subforum.
I personally don't think it warrants andother seperate forum. I'd leave it in this one. Easier to people to find and use. But thats' just me
I'll be posting some shots of a Japanese restaurant I did soon. No time.......
Abrazos,
Mark

Mark, it appears that you had the middle piece higher and lowered it. (I can see the extra holes in that piece).
Perhaps that was a good move... wearing that at a crowded gathering, I wouldn't want to get bumped by a wayward elbow!
The dangerous side of bamboo !

Quite right. Your original post is well placed in the Things Bamboo Forum.
My completely OT workshop discussion is now at:

Quite right Mark. You have hawk eyes. In fact they were all a bit higher. I tried it on and nearly punctured my jugular! So I thought it best to lower them a bit.
I'm going to make another one and see if I can interest some galleries around here. But perhaps with a stainless steel wire. The colour would go well with the bamboo, it wouldn't cause a skin rash but it would be much cheaper than the gold. I think it's hard to mix bamboo, which is thought of as a not so valuable material, with precious stones or metals. ( looking at it from a marketing point of view that is)

Hi Mark,
One thing I noticed working in a miniaturized world is that the smallest details or flaws are noticed... Perhaps I should rephrase this. I never realized how meticulous I can be till I began working with small pieces. You wrote...

Bamboo does mix wonderfully with other mediums. Very complimentary, and though I personally prefer `au natural' bamboo, the bamboo can look even very beautiful when subtely combined with other materials.
The mix has more to do with ones personal delight, cost (affordability) of materials, and targeted market.
There is costume jewelry and then there's fine art jewelry ...
One persons trash is another persons treasure, and vice-versa...
So it comes down to a matter of perspective, and ability and willingness to pay for ornamentation and pleasure...
Here's an example of works by Fred Tate:
